A briefing of the National Carrier on the organization of summer rail passenger transportation and implementation of the intermodal transportation project was held at the site of Samruk Kazyna JSC.

In his speech, Zhanibek Taizhanov, the General Director of Passenger Transportation JSC, noted that it is planned to transport about 4.5 million passengers during the holiday period of 2023.

To ensure the convenience of passengers during the tourist season, 11 routes from Astana, Almaty, East Kazakhstan and Abai regions will run to the coast of Lake Alakol. For the first time, a comfortable train Talgo will depart from the capital on the route Astana-Dostyk. The train will run twice a week. During the summer period, it is planned to transport 30 thousand more passengers to Lake Alakol compared to the last year.

According to the speaker, over the past two years, passenger traffic in this direction and back has doubled (from 124 thousand to 240 thousand).

In order to improve transport accessibility, Passenger Transportation JSC is working together with the Ministry of Industry and Infrastructural Development of the Republic of Kazakhstan, akimats, tour operators, air and road carriers to organize intermodal transportation within the country (using two or more modes of transport/carriers). This will form the basis of a new model of domestic transportation to meet the transport needs of the population.  

It is planned to provide the following intermodal transportation services:

• the TRAIN+TRAIN service assumes travel to the destination with a transfer from one train to another;

• the TRAIN+BUS service will provide a transfer for passengers from the train station to their homes;

• the TRAIN + PLANE service transfers passengers from the train station to the airport.

To improve the feedback with passengers, Passenger Transportation JSC launched the Telegram bot “KTZH_PP_BOT” in the pilot mode. Through this communication channel, you can get the necessary information about the purchase and return of a ticket, the schedule of your train and other reference data.

The total number of railway passenger routes is 140. Of these, Passenger Transportation JSC services 73%, the rest are serviced by private carriers.  

The National Carrier’s fleet consists of over 2,100 passenger cars, including 108 electric train cars. Today, more than 50% of the car fleet is under the age of 11 years, 17% – from 11 to 20 years, 32% - older than 20 years.  

KTZh is conducting purposeful and step-by-step work on updating the passenger car fleet. Over 10 years, the fleet has been updated by 50%.  It is planned to purchase 100 new railcars in 2023. And until 2030, other 537 passenger cars will be acquired under the agreement on strategic cooperation between JSC NC KTZh and Stadler, signed during the investment round table in Geneva with participation of the Presidents of Kazakhstan and Switzerland.
